You may not have heard the term sexting before, but you’ve probably heard of instances of it happening.
Sexting involves sending sexually suggestive messages or nude or nearly-nude photos via text or email. Some
of your friends may think sexting with their boyfriend or girlfriend is harmless. In fact, it could be against the law.
Creating, sending or possessing a nude or semi-nude photo of a minor can be considered child pornography—
even if you are a minor yourself! That means you could face criminal charges.
HOW HUMILIATING
If a criminal record isn’t enough to stop you from sexting, how about public humiliation? The stories you’ve heard about a nude photo falling into the wrong hands and circulating around school aren’t urban myths. That really happens. What you don’t hear about is how the victims are often humiliated to the point of having to transfer schools.
THE RULE OF MOM
When it comes to sending or posting photos or videos online, here’s a good rule of thumb. Never send or post a pic that you wouldn’t want your mom or dad to see. Because once a photo goes public, it floats around the internet forever. And there’s no telling who might come across it.. Do you really want your grandma or your potential future boss to stumble upon pics of you and your friends chillin'? Probably not.
